Hello, hello faithful newsletter subscribers. I’m sorry this year wasn’t anywhere close to what you were expecting in terms of written output from me. Obviously my curling output was higher than ever with my involvement with the Slams and the Broom Brothers pod, but I wasn’t writing a lot…and now I can finally tell you why. I wrote a book.
Curling Rocks!: Chronicles of the Roaring game will be out October 14, and is available for pre-order now, and I am so excited for you to be able to read it. It’s a funny and touching look at the game that combines stories from my own failed career with a bunch of chapters about the pro game, from curling’s worst fashion ideas to what it might look like if you had to build a Frankencurler using parts from curlers. It’s meant to appeal to both the diehard fan and the casual fan alike, and I really hope you like it.
Funny enough, I had actually pitched this book a few years ago with the help of my friend, comedian and author Charlie Demers. We got very close but ultimately didn’t get it landed, but with the success of Broomgate, Charlie urged me to pitch again and we found a great home with Douglas & McIntyre. I’m very excited to be working with them, and the book also features some amazing illustrations from my friend and great cartoonist Alyssa Hirose.
There will be some plans coming for book launches, writers’ fests, and more, so stay tuned for those in the near future. I look forward to meeting a bunch of you over the next year or so.
And finally, some have already asked and I do believe e-books and audio books are in the works and in the plans. Much more to come, but in the meantime, pre-orders are available now and they mean a lot to the overall sales of the book, as bookstores use them to gauge how many copies they should order, etc. So if you’re at all interested, I’d love for you to get a pre-order in now, using the following links:
This one will direct you to your nearest independent bookstore: https://www.indiebookstores.ca/book/9781771624558/

Thank you so much, and I hope you’re enjoying your summer. More writing to come in the fall, I hope. Until then…
You should definitely plan something for Winnipeg when you are in the province for the AMJ Players Championship in Steinbach - the home of the late great Vic Peters, in January. There Is a great independent bookstore in Winnipeg, McNally Robinson, and a very active and engaged curling community. You will be feted like royalty!
Well this will be fun! I just pre-ordered my copy.
